Ronnies of Worcester Baseball Club Team History
First organized for the 1977 summer season, the original name of the team was the Worcester Recs, a partnership formed by the City of Worcester Parks and Recreation Department and Worcester Businessman Ronald "Sonny" Stultz. Sonny was the owner of Ronnies Auto Body and Standard Auto Wrecking, a philanthropist and a sports buff. His association with youth and adult sports had been synonymous for decades. In the summer of 1978, Sonny assumed the role of sole sponsor of the baseball club and the name of the team was officially changed to Ronnies Baseball Club of Worcester.
Ronnies Baseball Club is somewhat unique in that it had the same sponsor since they began. Sonny passed away in 2015, yet the team has continued to play under the same moniker of "Ronnies" in honor of the memory and loyalty of Mr. Stultz.
On the roster for the 47 years of their existence has been Mike Nosel as a pitcher, a playing coach and more recently team coach. Ronnies has some illustrious alumni, namely, Worcester natives J.P. Ricciardi, NY Met Minor Leaguer and former General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Mark Johnson, a Major league veteran of the Pirates, Angels and Mets. There have been many other former Ronnies players who went on to play with great success in various levels of professional baseball.
Ronnies has been a successful team winning 6 Championships in the earlier Bay State League membership and winning 6 Championships as a member of the Central New England Baseball Association since 1990.
In the summer of 2005, Ronnies placed second in the Mass Stan Musial Tournament, second in the New England Regional, and third in the North Atlantic Regional, its longest stay in tournament competition. In 2006, Ronnies finished third in the Mass State Tournament, third in the New England Regional and fifth in the North Atlantic Regional.
Overall, Ronnies has won 850 games with the best single season record of 47-7-1 set back in 1987. |
